Adult man getting braces

25 Nov Debunking Common Myths About Getting Braces as an Adult

If you’re getting braces as an adult you might feel apprehensive, worried, or even embarrassed. You’re an adult, you’re supposed to know how to take care of your teeth right?

Hold up before you start a downward spiral into feeling self-conscious. Getting braces is nothing to be ashamed of. You don’t get to control how your jaw is formed or how your teeth come in, nor should you feel shame for needing them.

Plenty of adults need braces—trust us, you’re not alone. In fact, we’ve outlined below some of the most common myths that just aren’t true.

Myth 1: Getting Braces as an Adult Just Isn’t Going to Work Since You’re Too Old

It’s definitely true that many people get braces in their teen years, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective later in life. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Braces can work as well on a teenager as they can a senior adult—it’s never too late to improve your smile.

Myth 2: Braces Will Make You Look Ugly

To be fair this is a little subjective, but unlike years ago, braces don’t stand out nearly as much as they used to. Today, you can get braces in a wide variety of colours and even ones that are neutral, white, or clear to minimize their visibility.

Depending on the severity of your teeth alignment needs, Invisalign may be another option that allows “braces” to be basically invisible. Invisalign uses a series of clear trays that fit over your teeth to align them back into place and can’t easily be seen unless you’re up close with that person. Thus, they’re a great choice for still feeling confident about your smile when you’re in pictures.

Myth 3: Braces Are Your Only Option

As we just mentioned, braces don’t have to be your only option, using Invisalign is also a great alternative. It’s an especially good choice for people who still want to be able to eat what they like without the worry of food getting caught in their braces. Plus, there’s no worry of getting cavities as a result of caught food in brackets or the metal gear either.

However, I may still not be the best choice for everyone. Talk to your orthodontist if Invisalign may be a better course of action than braces.

Myth 4: Braces Are Painful

Are braces uncomfortable when they’re first put on? Yes. Do they take some getting used to which may cause some discomfort? Also yes. Are braces painful though? No.

You may have heard from friends or family braces were incredibly uncomfortable for them, but nowadays the pain from braces put on or worn has been almost completely eliminated.

Modern treatment has advanced to move your teeth in much less painful ways and ensure the sides of your mouth don’t catch on your braces as well.

While frustrating, getting braces as an adult is still an effective solution. You can still look great in them and not worry about being in daily pain or when they’re put on. Braces simply help you get your best smile, no matter what age you are.
